MAN RESPONSIBLE FOR 1954'S BASTARDIZATION OF THE PLEDGE - DEAD AT 97
ALEXANDRIA, Pa. - The Rev. George M. Docherty, credited with helping to push Congress to insert the phrase "under God" into the Pledge of Allegiance (in 1954 - 10 years before I was born - so not THAT long ago), has died at 97.
Docherty, then pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, just blocks from the White House, gave a sermon in 1952 saying the pledge should acknowledge God.
He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was unfamiliar with the pledge until he heard it recited by his 7-year-old son, Garth.
"I didn't know that the Pledge of Allegiance was, and he recited it, 'one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,'" he recalled in an interview with The Associated Press in 2004. "I came from Scotland, where we said 'God save our gracious queen,' 'God save our gracious king.' Here was the Pledge of Allegiance, and God wasn't in it at all."
There was little effect from that initial sermon, but he delivered it again on Feb. 7, 1954, after learning that President Dwight Eisenhower would be at the church.
The next day, Rep. Charles G. Oakman, R-Mich., introduced a bill to add the phrase "under God" to the pledge, and a companion bill was introduced in the Senate.
Eisenhower signed the law on Flag Day that year.

Half a century ago, at the height of anti-Communist fervor, Congress added the words ''under God'' to the Pledge of Allegiance. It was a petty attempt to link patriotism with religious piety, to distinguish us from the godless Soviets.
But after millions of repetitions over the years, the phrase has become part of the backdrop of American life, just like the words ''In God We Trust'' on our coins and ''God bless America'' uttered by presidents at the end of important speeches.
Yesterday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in California ruled 2 to 1 that those words in the pledge violate the First Amendment, which says that ''Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.''
The majority sided with Michael Newdow, who had complained that his daughter is injured when forced to listen to public school teachers lead students daily in a pledge that includes the assertion that there is a God.

Watched 'Inside Edition' tonight. The Lipstick on a Pig the lead story. Left it as an open question.That is what caught my eye.. Setting it up as that - a fun game of 'fresh today' attack ads Keep with me- this was America as we have all grown up in dying nationwide on TV. Just prior to the playing the preview - the host played Mavericks - McCain and Palin are presentedas Superheroes - images of them soaring through blue sky. Drudge today had a picture of the mock-up of an imagined Palin Superhero doll.Short skirt - lots of leg. Lots of doll leg. Now the attack ad. The video clip opens with a snarling wolf.Half White and Half Black. He is the lead wolf in a charging pack. Most white.But he is leading and he is Half Black and Half White. Described by the announcer as coming for Sarah Palin. The announcer says he has already attacked Palin - and that he will notstop until he destroy her. Seriously. The WOLF turns around and attacks- but now he as he is going in for the kill he has turned .... ALL BLACK. -------------------------------------------- This is 2008.40 years after 1968.An ENTIRE Generation KNOWS this is wrong and why it is wrong.Half of this living Generation is supporting this and the other have may not notice. The Wisconsin woman, 20, was arrested earlier this month in connection with a pair of books overdue for several months.
Dalibor, who made the mistake of ignoring a court citation issued after she failed to respond to letters and phone calls from the Grafton library, and on August 6 for failing to return copies of Janet Fitch's bestseller "White Oleander" (a 1999 Oprah Book Club selection) and "Angels & Demons," author Dan Brown's follow-up to the "The Da Vinci Code she was "apprehended" at her family's home, CUFFED and STUFFED in a police cruiser, taken away and booked for violating the "overdue library materials" ordinance.
She also had to pose for a mug shot at the Grafton Police Department.
Dalibor subsequently settled with the library by paying her overdue fines.

Obama V.P. prospect and Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine mocked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Thursday for not knowing exactly how many houses he owns.
"I understand that Sen. McCain was asked yesterday this question, 'how many houses do you own?,' and he couldn't answer that question. He couldn’t count high enough apparently to even know how many houses he owns," said Kaine.
Kaine, who made his remarks on CNN's "American Morning," was referring to an interview that the presumptive Republican nominee gave to Politico on Wednesday when the Arizona senator was uncertain how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own.
"I think -- I'll have my staff get to you," McCain told Politico in Las Cruces, N.M. "It's condominiums where -- I'll have them get to you."
The correct answer, McCain's staff told Politico, is at least four, located in Arizona, California and Virginia.

WASHINGTON — Same-sex marriage is legal in two states, but not a single one will show up in the 2010 census.
The Census Bureau says the federal Defense of Marriage Act bars the agency from recognizing gay marriages in the nation's 10-year count, even though the marriages are legal in Massachusetts and California.
The agency's director, Steven Murdock, said in an interview Thursday that the 1996 federal law "has that effect, in terms of being a federal agency. We are restricted by it."
The Census Bureau does not ask people about their sexual orientation, but it does ask about their relationships to the head of the household. Many gay couples are listed in census figures as unmarried, same-sex partners, though it is an imperfect tally of all gay couples.
Murdock said the bureau will strive to count same-sex couples in the 2010 census, just as it has in the past.
But those people who say they are married will be reclassified as unmarried by the Federal Government in it's records.
Same-sex couples with no children will not be classified as families, according the bureau's policy.

The neocons hated President Reagan, because he ended the cold war with diplomacy, when they desired a military victory over the Soviet Union.
Deprived of this, the neocons now want victory over Russia.
Today, Reagan is gone. The Republican Establishment is gone. There are no conservative power centers, only neoconservative power centers closely allied with Israel, which uses the billions of dollars funneled into Israeli coffers by US taxpayers to influence US elections and foreign policy.
The Republican candidate for president is a warmonger. There are no checks remaining in the Republican Party on the neocons’ proclivity for war. What Republican constituencies oppose war? Can anyone name one?
The Democrats are not much better, but they have some constituencies that are not enamored of war in order to establish US world hegemony. The Rapture Evangelicals, who fervently desire Armageddon, are not Democrats; nor are the brainwashed Brownshirts desperate to vent their frustrations by striking at someone, somewhere, anywhere.
I get emails from these Brownshirts and attest that their hate-filled ignorance is extraordinary. They are all Republicans, and yet they think they are conservatives. They have no idea who I am, but since I criticize the Bush Regime and America’s belligerent foreign policy, they think I am a “liberal commie pinko.”
The only literate sentence this legion of fools has ever managed is: “If you hate America so much, why don’t you move to Cuba!”
Such is the current state of a Reagan political appointee in today’s Republican Party.

THREE American Supreme Court Justices still serving made a decision favoring state rights to allow individual citizens of a state the power to PUNISH and JAIL fellow AMERICAN CITIZENS for private consensual sexual pleasure with another adult of the same sex - even if they are in the privacy of their own home, deep in the middle acreage of their own land.

Fox News Apologizes to Transgendered Woman on America's Next Top Model
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) issued a media alert over an August 14th Fox News segment discussing the inclusion of a transgender woman, Isis, on the reality show America's Next Top Model. Fox News issued an on-air apology over the segment after the group called it “offensive,” “crude” and “dehumanizing.”
During the segment, Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett bandies about with Us Weekly Editor-at-large Ian Drew about the twenty-two year old model hopeful.
The segment opens with Isis' description of herself as a woman whose “cards were dealt differently.” “Boy, that's an understatement,” Jarred jokes. “Definitely, an understatement,” Drew responds snidely.
After giving a few examples – Calpernia Addams on Transamerican Love Story and Laverne Cox on the current I Want To Work For Diddy – Drew refers to the inclusion of transgender people on reality television as “The Crying Game 2008.” Then goes on to insult the show itself, “I got to tell you, we call it America's Next Top Tranny a lot of the time anyway.
A lot of these girls – you can't tell what they are. And so this just kind of blends in even more. She doesn't look any different from any other contestants who have been on there. I mean they're not exactly, like, the most high-class group of women usually.”

Flythe, 17, of West Baltimore - both of whom are members of the Bloods gang, according to police - were arrested and charged Thursday evening with first-degree murder. They are accused of killing a fellow gang member days before his high school graduation in May.
The body of Steven Parrish, 18, was found May 29 in a wooded area near his parents' home and Woodlawn Cemetery.
"It's awful," Baltimore County prosecutor William B. Bickel said in an interview after yesterday's bail-review hearing in Towson. "You're talking about a gangland-style execution because he was gay. They took him out back in a field and stabbed him to death."

Angelo Taylor - NBC ignoring Child Molestation case
Taylor wrapped himself in a flag and was presented by NBC as an American Hero.
Most news links from 2005 on the web have been scrapped - but it did happen and he was charged with Child Molestation. He was 25. She was 15. Sounds more like what until this decade serious adults called Statutory Rape - a very real crime. He copped a guilty plea to a lesser charge ... but the reality remains. The double standard here amazes me - just imagine the shit storm if that had been a 15 year old teenage male he had be caught getting off with? That is his mugshot up there.
